What is the online Quran Tafseer and translation course?
The online Quran Tafseer and translation course is a guided study of what the Quran says and what it means, taught by a teacher in private video classes. The student reads a passage in Arabic, learns the meaning of each word, and then studies the explanation of the passage as a whole.
Most Muslims who grew up outside the Arab world can recite the Quran but do not understand it. This course closes that gap step by step. The teacher explains in English or Urdu, so families in the US, UK, Canada and the Gulf choose the language they understand best. Classes run 24/7, so the timetable fits any time zone.
Translation and Tafseer: what is the difference?
Translation gives the meaning of the words; Tafseer explains the message behind them. Both are needed, and this course teaches them in that order.
Word-by-word translation
Each Arabic word is matched to its meaning in English or Urdu. The student sees how the sentence is built and starts recognizing repeated Quranic words.
Tarjuma (fluent translation)
Tarjuma is the meaning of a whole verse in natural English or Urdu. It is readable, but it hides some Arabic nuance that the word-by-word stage shows.
Tafseer (explanation)
Tafseer, from the Arabic root meaning to uncover, explains a passage using its context, related verses, Hadith and the explanations of classical scholars.
Stage 1: learn the Quran with word-by-word translation
Stage 1 teaches the Quran with translation, word by word, in English or Urdu. The student reads each verse in Arabic, then gives the meaning of every word, then the meaning of the full verse. This is the fastest route to understanding the surahs recited daily in Salah.
This is how verse 2 of Surah Al-Fatiha, the verse after the Basmalah, looks in a word-by-word lesson:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
| Arabic word | English meaning | Urdu meaning |
|---|---|---|
| الْحَمْدُ | All praise | سب تعریفیں |
| لِلَّهِ | is for Allah | اللہ کے لیے |
| رَبِّ | Lord | رب |
| الْعَالَمِينَ | of the worlds | تمام جہانوں کا |
Learn the Quran with Urdu translation
Urdu-speaking students study the Quran with Urdu translation (Quran Pak ka tarjuma) using a widely used printed Urdu translation as the base text. Urdu shares many words with Quranic Arabic, such as rabb, rahmat, ilm and sabr, so Urdu speakers often recognize meanings quickly. This option suits Pakistani and Indian families abroad who want children and parents to study in the language spoken at home.
Learn the Quran with English translation
English-speaking students study the Quran with English translation, comparing a widely used English rendering with the word-by-word meaning. This option suits second-generation Muslims, reverts and anyone who thinks and reads in English. The teacher points out where one Arabic word carries meanings that an English word cannot hold alone.
Stage 2: what does the Tafseer stage cover?
The Tafseer stage covers three things for every passage: the context of revelation, the explanation of each ayah, and the lessons for life and worship. Students move to this stage surah by surah, once the translation of that surah is clear.
- Context of revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul): the events and questions that a verse was revealed in response to, and whether the surah is Makki (revealed in Makkah) or Madani (revealed in Madinah).
- Explanation of the ayat: key words, links to other verses on the same subject, related Hadith, and how classical scholars understood the passage.
- Lessons and reflection (Tadabbur): what the passage teaches about belief, worship, character and family life, and how to act on it.
Students who want to understand the Arabic grammar behind the meanings can add our Quranic Arabic course. Students who want broader topics such as Aqeedah, Seerah and Fiqh can continue with online Islamic studies.
Which Tafseer books are used as references?
Lessons draw on well-known classical works of Tafseer that are available in English and Urdu, so students can read further on their own. The most widely used reference is Tafsir Ibn Kathir, written by the 14th-century scholar Ismail ibn Kathir, which explains verses through other verses, Hadith and reports from the early generations.
Other classical works students may meet include Tafsir al-Tabari, one of the earliest complete commentaries, and Tafsir al-Jalalayn, a concise commentary widely used in teaching. The teacher summarizes these explanations at the student’s level; the course does not require reading them in Arabic.
What happens in a 30-minute Tafseer class?
A 30-minute Tafseer class covers a short passage, usually a few verses, from recitation to reflection. A typical class follows this order:
- Recitation (about 5 minutes): the student recites the passage; the teacher corrects pronunciation.
- Word-by-word meaning (about 10 minutes): the student translates each word and then the full verse in English or Urdu.
- Explanation (about 10 minutes): the teacher explains the context, related verses and the classical explanation.
- Review and questions (about 5 minutes): the student summarizes the lesson in their own words and asks questions.
Progress is measured in verses and surahs completed and by short reviews, where the student explains a previous passage without notes.
Who is this Quran translation and Tafseer course for?
The course is for teens and adults who can read the Quran in Arabic and want to understand it. Students who cannot read yet start with reading lessons first.

- Teens who have finished Quran reading and are ready for meaning.

- Surah Al-Fatiha and Juz 30: the short surahs recited in Salah.
- Ayat al-Kursi (2:255): a single verse about Allah’s knowledge and authority; read our guide to Ayat ul Kursi before class.

Online Quran Tafseer course FAQs
Do I need to know Arabic to join the Tafseer course?
No. You need to read the Quran in Arabic script, but you do not need to understand Arabic. Meanings are taught in English or Urdu, word by word.
Can I learn the Quran with Urdu translation online?
Yes. Choose Urdu as your language of instruction and the teacher teaches the word-by-word meaning, the full Urdu translation and the Tafseer in Urdu.
How is Tafseer different from reading a translation?
A translation gives the meaning of the words. Tafseer explains the context of revelation, links the passage to other verses and Hadith, and draws out its lessons.
Which Tafseer books do lessons refer to?
Lessons refer to well-known classical works, mainly Tafsir Ibn Kathir, along with works such as Tafsir al-Tabari and Tafsir al-Jalalayn, explained at the student’s level.
How long does it take to complete the Quran translation?
It depends on classes per week and how much detail you choose. A few verses are covered in each 30-minute class, so short surahs take a few classes and the full Quran is a multi-year study.
Can I choose which surah to start with?
Yes. Many students start with Al-Fatiha, Juz 30, Ayat al-Kursi or Surah Al-Kahf. You agree the starting point with your teacher during the free trial.
